HRH the Duke of Calabria, Grand Master, visited Portugal on the 18-19th of November, at the invitation of HRH Infante Dom Miguel, Duke of Viseu, President of the Royal Commission of Portugal.
In the late morning of the 18th His Royal Highness the Grand Master, accompanied by HE Ambassador D. Carlos Bárcena Portolés, attended a function in the Portuguese club, Grémio Literário, in the presence of Their Royal Highness the Duke of Braganza, Bailiff Grand Cross of Justice decorated with the Collar and the Duchess of Braganza. HRH the Duke of Calabria invested HRH the Infante Dom Miguel with the collar of the Order of San Gennaro and HRH the Duke of Braganza was given the special appointment of President ad honorem of the Royal Deputation of the Constantinian Order, a position especially created for HRH as head of the Royal House of Portugal, a token of the excellent relations between the two royal families. The last time the highest office in the Order was bestowed on a foreign Prince was in 1801 when HIM Emperor Alexander I of Russia was appointed Grand Prefect ad honorem by King Ferdinand IV and III, as Grand Master, as evidence of the high regard in which His Imperial Majesty was held by the Grand Master and King.
In the evening of the 18th an investiture Mass was celebrated in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Martyrs, Lisbon, by the Most Rev. Canon Armando Duarte, Chaplain of the Royal Commission of Portugal; also present was HE Ambassador Miguel de Polignac de Barros, Ambassador of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Grand Cross of Justice, HE Ambassador Don Juan Manuel de Barandica, Ambassador of Spain to Portugal, Grand Cross of Justice (accompanied by his wife, Dońa Beatriz Mazzarasa), Ambassador Manuel Côrte-Real, Knight of Justice, vice president of the Portuguese Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. This was followed by a reception at the Turf Club, Lisbon, attended by TRH the Duke and Duchess of Braganza at the invitation of the Infante Dom Miguel, President of the Royal Commission.
On Saturday 19th November, HRH the Duke of Calabria, accompanied by TRH the Duke of Bragança and the Duke of Viseu, paid a special visit to the National Museum of Arte Antigua, where they were received by the Director, Professor António Filipe Pimentel. Following the visit HRH the Grand Master was received by Ambassador Barandica at the Palace of Palhavă, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Portugal. HRH then left for the airport accompanied by the Duke of Viseu, and returned to Madrid.
