Written by Royal Commission of Italy

The Italian Royal Commission has organized a pilgrimage to Monte Sant Angelo from 31 March to 2 April. The sanctuary is dedicated to the Archangel Michael and is amongst the most ancient places of Christian pilkgrimage. It was from Monte Sant Angelo that crusaders attended mass, pronounced a solemn oath of faith and received their final blessing before departing for the Holy Land. Monte Sant Angelo was particularly dear to the Kings of Two Sicilies.

The pilgrimage was led by our Grand Prior, H. Em. The Most Rev Cardinal Dario Castrillón Hoyos, and was assisted by H. E. Mons. Michele Seccia Bishop of San Severo as well as by several chaplains of our Sacred Order.

Details regarding the pilgrimage:

  • Arrival was Friday evening at the Palace Hotel in Monte Sant Angelo followed by informal dinner.
  • On Saturday morning, the nearby Anjou Castle and att 12:00, Angelus were visited. At 17:30, Knights in Mantles and Dames with decorations and veil in procession and rosary recital went through the town of Monte Sant Angelo to the Sanctuary. At 19:00, H. Em. Cardinal Dario Castrillón Hoyos has celebrated mass by the Sanctuary in honour of the Archangel Michael with a special blessing for those present. A guided tour of the Sanctuary followed. At 21:00 there was a dinner at the Palace Hotel.
  • On Sunday morning, the participants left Monte Sant Angelo for the Sanctuary of St Matthew. At 11:00 a Gregorian Mass was celebrated, knights wearing mantles and dames wearing the cross of the Order. A light lunch followed.
