General Filiberto Cecchi, Chief of Staff of the Italian Army

The promotion of Generale di Corpo d'Armata Filiberto Cecchi, Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, to Knight Grand Cross of Merit has been announced.

General Cecchi was born in Genga (AN) on 25 January 1944.

He attended the 20th Course of the Military Academy of Modena and the Junior Officer School.

After being commissioned as a Cavalry Officer, he served for more than 10 years in the "Savoia Cavalleria" Cavalry Regiment where he held several line and staff appointments and became a competition horse rider.

After being through the 104th Basic and Advanced Staff Course, he was employed at the Army Headquarters from 1982 to 1985 at the Personnel Division and was later sent to the USA for the "US Command and General Staff Course" (1985-1986).

He served as Commanding Officer of the 5th Cavalry Battalion "Lancieri di Novara" (1986-1987).

After a short period spent at the Army Headquarters as Chief of Section at the Operation Division and at the National Defense Headquarters as Staff Officer at the Office of the Chief of the Defense General Staff, he commanded the Recruiting Office in Turin before being employed at the Army HQ again as Chief of the Operation Division (1991-1994), just while several missions were carried out both abroad (Albania, Mozambique, Somalia, etc.) and in Italy (Forza Paris, Vespri Siciliani, etc.) and when the planning phase of the intervention in the Balkans was about to start.

Between 1994 and 1996, he commanded the re-established School of Cavalry in Montelibretti (near Rome) and later served as Military and Defense Attaché at the Italian Embassy in Israel (1996-1999).

He was then appointed for the second time as Commander of the Cavalry School -which had incorporated the Armoured Troops School- while being Deputy Inspector of the Cavalry (1999-2001) at the same time.

In 2001, he was Deputy Commander of the NATO troops in Kosovo (KFOR 5) and later Deputy Inspector of the Army TRADOC Command.

From 2002 to 2005 he served as Commander of the Italian Joint Operations Headquarters. Since 23 July 2005 he has been holding the office of Chief of the Army General Staff.

General Cecchi obtained a degree in Strategic Sciences and a Master of Arts in Strategic Sciences at the University of Turin, and attended the Horseriding Military Instructor Course and the NATO Course for Psychological Warfare.

General Cecchi is Knight of Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and has been awarded the Army Merit Gold Cross, the Italian Red Cross Gold Medal of Merit, the Army Long Command Medal of Merit (15 years), apart from other awards he deserved for his merits during more than 40 years of active duty.

He is married to Francesca and has two children: Valentina and Andrea.
