GIORGI A., SCASSO A. (a cura di), Statuti e Capitoli della Militia Aureata, Angelica, Costantiniana, di S. Giorgio, Pontedera, 2012

The Constantinian Sacred Military Order of St. George is undoubtedly the most ancient among orders of chivalry which have characterized the centuries-old history of the Christian Occident. Its remote origins date back to Emperor Constantine I who, during the night before the famous battle of Saxa Rubra, had, according to the legend, the vision of a bright cross bearing the motto In Hoc Signo Vinces . The Order, beyond this legendary founding hypothesis, was reorganized on certain basis by Isaac II Comnen Angel, Emperor of the East. Its finalities are primarily the glorification of the cross and the propagation of the faith. Francesco Sansovino, in June 1573, received the task by the Great Master of the Order (who promoted him as Lieutenant General of the Order) to review, correct and reform the old Statutes, which are presented here in anastatic reprint.
